About Bionet

Bionet is really an enabling organisation, helping us all to work together for better biosecurity outcomes.

Who are we?

Aligned with the government’s Biosecurity 2025 initiative and the National Pest Management Plan of Action, three government agencies (Department of Conservation, Biosecurity New Zealand and Land Information New Zealand), along with regional councils, have funded the Bionet Unincorporated Joint Venture to bring together the best biosecurity tools, advice and resources in one easy to access location. Biosecurity in New Zealand is legislated by the Biosecurity Act 1993 and tasks the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) with biosecurity leadership at a national level and regional councils at a regional level. DOC and LINZ are major land and waterway owners and so have also committed resources and funding to Bionet. Bionet provides this Bionet.NZ web portal and the services which support it.

What do we do?

The Bionet organisation works to promote co-operation between any party active in the biosecurity sector from government agencies through NGO's, trusts and community groups. Our focus is collaboration and we work to facilitate better outcomes, we are not a regulatory or governing body. The most visible aspect of our work is this web portal which is designed to enable easy collaboration, research and communication to enhance biosecurity activity across New Zealand. Bionet as an organisation exists to support both the portal and the biosecurity community. Our focus is:

  • Growing New Zealand’s biosecurity capability and awareness;
  • Protecting our environment, economy and trade;
  • Connecting people and organisations for more effective biosecurity outcomes.

Why do we do it?

It is known that many millions of dollars are spent on biosecurity in New Zealand by government, landowners and trusts; however until now there has not been adequate collaboration which has resulted in gaps, overlaps and overspend. We do not have a remit to tell an individual farmer how to manage his or her land, however we can help that farmer to quickly and easily find the best practice advice available. Our goal is that by doing this we will help all New Zealanders deliver better, more effective biosecurity outcomes whilst not increasing costs.

How do we do it?

The content on this site has either been developed by Bionet or sourced from other reputable bodies. Bionet has a rigorous review process whereby technical advisory groups of experts review all content for safety, accuracy, quality, readability and currency.

Bionet has a rigourous process for ensuring that content is accurate, appropriate and current.

Bionet has a governance group formed from representatives from the core funding partners and a number of technical advisory groups. It also employs people to manage relationships and to ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of the portal.

In addition to information we intend in future to promote approved events, host job advertisements, guide training and accreditation and host contact lists to enable cooperation. Building on the collaboration concept we have the idea of groups, where for example communities may form a group via the portal to communicate information about their biosecurity activities. We also offer some ideas for schools and children to become active in biosecurity as a part of their education. BioNet will evolve and grow over time, check back regularly for new content or subscribe to our newsfeeds.
